More Research Supports Positive Parenting & Parenting Training

It is one of the responsibilities of the Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC) to share news about research that demonstrates that positive parenting has many positive benefits.

For example, in 2015 CICC shared a study from the Oregon Social Learning Center. That study showed positive parenting did much more than improve the lives of the children who were the recipients. Positive parenting also improved the parenting of the children when they became parents! That study was conducted mainly with white parents and children.

Now, a more recent study with African American parents and children in Atlanta, Georgia, shows that when there is more talking between parents and children, such positive parenting seems to protect the children from later alcohol abuse. This new study is reported on and described in an a article by Janice Wood.

These research findings are further support for the training and education of parents in positive parenting programs and approaches, such as those made available by CICC, including its programs for African Americans.

HOW TO RAISE KIND KIDS: A Modern Masterpiece!

The latest parenting guidebook by Dr. Thomas Lickona, the father of the Character Education Movement, is a contemporary masterpiece.

Every chapter and appendix draws on the latest research on what to do to raise kind children. Dr. Lickona and his wife’s experiences in raising their now adult children and their grandchildren are also highlighted.

His book tackles the latest challenges to parents, such as how to help kids avoid the dangers of a Hyper-Sexualized Culture – And Find True Love.

He educates about the history and current status of our Toxic-Political Culture, and how parents can give their children guidance on how to cope. He also tackles and helps us with the Culture of Entitlement and spoiling children.

There are special sections on raising tempermentally difficult children.

Altogether, a cornucopia of guidance for helping to shape respectable and responsible lives for our children. “This book should become the Dr. Spock volume for today’s child-rearing environment”, says Dr. Alvy of CICC. He is a colleague and admirer of Dr. Lickona, who was a fellow recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the institution from which they both earned their doctorates.

Dr. Alvy also made extensive usage of Dr. Lickona’s stage of moral reasoning in CICC’s national model parenting programs, The New Confidant Parenting and the Effective Black Parenting Programs.

Lickona’s new book is the gem of his prodigious contributions to the quality of family and community life. Do not hesitate to obtain it right away! To obtain it, click HERE

As the nation’s foremost protector of children, Marian Wright Edelman’s Children’s Defense Fund has once again created a series of guidelines that should be part of every family’s basic values and actions. And once again our parent education organization, Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC) is making these available to every person and group we relate to, and especially to the parenting instructors we train nationwide to help parents do the best job possible.

Just as we widely distribute the practical rules the Trust Fund created to help children and youth to Get Home Safely when stopped by the police, we are herein orienting you to the Defense Fund’s excellent new document, THE TRUTH ABOUT GUNS. Click here to obtain your copy:

This carefully researched treatise contains 11 “truths” about guns that everyone should be aware of and act upon. Please further distribute this document to family members, friends, colleagues, schools, places of business, and places of worship.

As our children are now telling us, “Enough!” “Not one more!” “Fear has no place in our schools!” “Life is more important than guns!”

Let’s follow their lead!

LOS ANGELES, CA—In the late 1970s, the non-profit Center for the Improvement of Child Caring (CICC) created, and began training instructors to deliver, what has become the most widely used parenting program for African Americans, the Effective Black Parenting Program. Over a million African American parents have already been helped in raising happy, healthy and successful children, because they have enrolled in classes that teach the values, ideas and techniques of this national model program.

Now, for the first time, there is a website that is devoted totally to that program and it’s many benefits to parents and children. The new website is .

The website details how and why the program was created and indicates all the African American parenting authorities who were involved in its creation.

The website presents never-before available research findings that led to including in the program:

1. How parents can build a Pyramid of Success for Black Children by modeling and reinforcing positive character traits.

2. How parents can learn and use Effective Praising, and other techniques of the Modern Black Self-Discipline Approach, to gain the cooperation and respect of their children. This modern approach provides a non-violent alternative to the Traditional Black Discipline Approach where physical punishment is used primarily.

3. How parents can learn and connect the positive parenting techniques and ideas of the program to relevant African Proverbs such as “When the heart overflows, it comes out through the mouth” and “A shepherd does not strike his sheep”.

The website further provides research findings on how the program improves child-parent relations and decreases child behavior problems. How to bring the program to a community is done by having more instructors trained through professionally-led workshops.

As Dr. Kerby Alvy, the founder and director of the 43-year-old CICC, states, “The existence and use of the Effective Black Parenting Program clearly shows that ‘Black Lives Matter’. And further shows that Black parents care enough to learn how to do the best job possible in raising their children.”

The next workshop to train instructors is scheduled for the week of March 5-9, 2018 in Merced, CA.
